Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a “tummy tuck,” is a cosmetic surgery designed to create a flatter, firmer abdominal profile.

Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure intended to make the abdomen thinner and firmer. It typically addresses excess skin and fat and may tighten the abdominal wall muscles to improve contour.

This procedure addresses loose or sagging skin, excess fat, and weak abdominal muscles conditions often caused by aging, pregnancy, significant weight changes, or previous surgeries.

Types of abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty involves removing excess skin and fat from the lower and middle abdomen while tightening the muscles and connective tissue (fascia) of the abdominal wall. The result is a smoother and more contoured midsection.

There are different types of abdominoplasty:

Full (Traditional) Abdominoplasty

Involves a hip-to-hip incision, tightening of abdominal muscles, removal of larger amounts of skin and fat, and typically repositioning of the belly button.

Mini Abdominoplasty

Involves a shorter incision and focuses on the area below the belly button, usually with less extensive tissue removal and no need to move the belly button.

Other variations (as needed by the surgeon)

Extended tummy tuck, fleur-de-lis tummy tuck, and contouring methods chosen based on skin laxity and patient goals.

What to expect

Customization

In all cases, the surgeon will determine the most appropriate procedure based on your anatomy, goals, and medical history.

Recovery timeline

Recovery time can vary, but most people need 6–8 weeks before returning to all normal activities. You may be able to resume light activities or return to work after 4–6 weeks, depending on the extent of your surgery and the nature of your job.

Risks

As with any major surgery, abdominoplasty carries risks such as infection, bleeding, and delayed healing. Swelling, pain, temporary or permanent numbness in the abdominal area, blood clots, and fluid accumulation (seroma) can also occur.

Scarring is expected

Most patients have a horizontal scar low on the abdomen that can typically be concealed by underwear or swimwear. Your surgeon will discuss these risks and how to minimize them during your consultation.

Restrictions

Avoid heavy lifting and high-impact activities until cleared by your surgeon.

Pregnancy after tummy tuck

Future pregnancies can affect abdominal contour; discuss timing with your surgeon if you may become pregnant.

FAQs

Who is a good candidate?

Good candidates typically have excess abdominal skin and fat, weakened or separated abdominal muscles, and realistic expectations about their results. Ideally, you should be in good physical health, at or near a stable weight, and finished with family planning, as future pregnancies can affect your results.
Smoking increases the risk of surgical complications. You should be a non-smoker or commit to stopping smoking both before and after the procedure.

How long is recovery?

Many people take 4–6 weeks to resume normal activities, with six to eight weeks for a fuller return to strenuous tasks; individual recovery varies.

What are the risks of abdominoplasty?

Common risks are Infection, bleeding, pain, swelling, and temporary numbness around the surgical area.
Other potential risks: Delayed wound healing, fluid accumulation, blood clots, asymmetry, changes in sensation, and rare complications affecting skin or tissue.

What should I do after surgery?

Prioritize rest, but gradually increase light activity such as gentle walking to promote circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots.
Wear a compression garment as directed (usually for 6–8 weeks)—this supports healing, minimizes swelling, and helps shape your new contour.
Eat a balanced, fiber-rich diet high in protein to aid recovery, and stay well-hydrated.
Follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully for incision care to reduce the risk of infection and promote optimal healing.
Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and vigorous activities for at least 6 weeks, or until cleared by your surgeon.
The goal of abdominoplasty is contouring, not weight loss. Maintaining a stable weight after surgery helps preserve results.
